Shelter of Hope

When disaster strikes, relief cannot wait. The American Red Cross will again hold their Shelter of Hope campaign from May 1-8, travelling through San Diego raising funds and awareness to support local disaster relief. Each day will be filled with activities and preparedness education in a new location.

The Red Cross Shelter of Hope will be visiting our San Diego Campus highlighting how we work together during times of crisis. During local disasters, San Diego Humane Society answers the call to set up a shelter for pets adjacent to the Red Cross shelters.

Beginning at 9:00 am, there will be a simulated Red Cross shelter and a simulated pet shelter – similar to what you might see in a true disaster scenario.  You can also stop by to put together your own pet disaster kit to keep with your own disaster kit so you and your pets can be “Red Cross Ready.”

In addition to giveaways, prizes and more, take part in one of these scheduled activities:

  • 10:00 am & 1:00 pm – Hands-Only CPR – learn how to help a bystander provide life-saving care until professional responders arrive. Participants learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 and properly administer continuous chest compressions.
  • 4:15 pm & 5:15 pm – Pet First Aid – dog and cat owners can learn how to provide emergency care until veterinary assistance is available. Seating in this class will be limited, please sign up online for the 4:15 pm (register) or 5:15 pm (register) to reserve a spot.
