Sea Turtle TalkBiology and Conservation of the Sea Turtles of California LIVE WEBINAR

Jeffrey A. Seminoff, Ph.D.
Leader, Marine Turtle Ecology & Assessment Program
NOAA-Southwest Fisheries Science Center
La Jolla, California USA

The fact that there are thriving sea turtle populations along California’s coast is one of our State’s best-kept biodiversity secrets. Five species are found here, with leatherbacks, green turtles, and occasionally, loggerhead turtles being the most common visitors. Green turtles thrive in coastal seagrass meadows and rocky reefs of so Cal, while leatherbacks access the nutrient rich waters in places like Monterey Bay and offshore of the Farallon Islands. And during the warmest years, loggerheads drop in from the central Pacific to benefit from our productive seas.  Join Dr. Jeffrey Seminoff as he explores the ecology and conservation of California’s sea turtles, blending natural history stories with knowledge from recent field research efforts throughout the State. There is a collection of good and bad news about sea turtles worldwide, and this presentation will also give a perspective of how California’s turtles are doing, as well as the broad efforts at State and Federal levels to protect turtles in our ocean backyard.

Dr. Seminoff is Leader of the Marine Turtle Ecology & Assessment Program at the National Marine Fisheries Service Southwest Fisheries Science Center. Since 1992 Jeff has been involved in ecological research and conservation of sea turtles in the Pacific Ocean. He is Past-President of the International Sea Turtle Society and hosted the 31st International Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation in San Diego. Jeff has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and his research has been featured on the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, PBS, and National Geographic.
