This Pet-Assisted Therapy Agreement (“Agreement”) is effective (“Effective Date”), and is by and between San Diego Humane Society (“SDHS”), a California non-profit corporation, and your facility (“Facility”) with reference to the following requirements.
The P-AT program charge is $50 per visit. We will bill you at the end of each month for any visits incurred or you may pay in full after your first visit.
Nonprofit organizations may receive 6 months of fee-waived visits with the option to extend for an additional 6 months at our regular $50 per visit fee.
The maximum term for visits is 12 months. At the end of the program term, you will have the option to be placed on the waiting list for future visits.
Please have a Facility staff member meet our P-AT volunteers when they arrive to show them exactly where the visit should take place. One or more of your staff members must remain present during our entire visit to assist working with your clients.
Make certain you are prepared for us in advance. Our program should be the only activity taking place in the room - this makes for better therapy and less distraction for the animals. The people bringing the animals are volunteers and as such do not receive any pay, so their time is very precious to us.
We do not allow smoking while our program is taking place.
Please include only those clients who truly want to be with the animals at our visits. We're particularly concerned with those individuals who could be fearful of or abusive to our animals or volunteers.
Experience has shown that our P-AT visits are most successful when done in a group setting with no more than 30 participants at a time. We are happy to break up the visit to two or more smaller groups, if you have more than 30 interested patients. We can also visit rooms at your facility for patients who do not leave their rooms, but must have a Facility staff person accompanying us.
Our volunteers are responsible for the animals and are trained to handle them. If your staff would like to assist handling our animals, we ask that they take direction from our volunteers to prevent any injuries or accidents to people and the animals. Our volunteers must always accompany our pets wherever they go -- Facility staff members are not permitted to take our pets out on their own during the visit.
All the animals that participate in the Pet-Assisted Therapy program are medically tested for a variety of diseases before their first visit. They also receive regular veterinary care while they continue working in the program. However, all animals are potential carriers for disease, and the best way to reduce transmission to your clients is to have them wash their hands before and after the P-AT visit has concluded and especially before eating or drinking.
Our volunteer team typically brings one rabbit, two guinea pigs, two rats and one Canine Ambassador dog on each visit. We cannot guarantee the availability of specific animals. The wellbeing of each animal will be considered and animals exhibiting signs of stress or illness will not be included on visits.
If you have animals at your facility, please make sure they are not present when our visits take place.
Facility shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless SDHS and its directors, officers and employees from and against any and all damages, liabilities, losses, fees, expenses, penalties and costs (including reasonable attorneys’ fees, costs and disbursements) arising as a result of or otherwise related to all claims, suits or proceedings brought by any third party (any such claim, suit or proceeding, a “Claim”) to the extent any such Claim arises from or relates to the services provided pursuant to this Agreement, except for Claims arising from SDHS’s willful misconduct or negligence. This indemnification shall survive the termination of this Agreement for a period of five (5) years.
Facility certifies that it maintains and is responsible for maintaining a commercial general liability insurance policy written on an occurrence form for not less than one million dollars ($1,000,000) per occurrence and two million dollars ($2,000,000) general aggregate.
Neither party shall be liable to the other for lost profits or business, indirect, consequential or punitive damages, whether based in contract or tort (including negligence, strict liability or otherwise), and whether or not advised of the possibility of such damages.
We reserve the right to discontinue P-AT visits to a facility at any time and for any reason.
If you have a change in your calendar or staff and will not be available for our scheduled visit, you must contact the P-AT coordinator with a minimum 5 business days’ notice. Visits cancelled with less than 5 business days' notice will be billed at full price.
